CJ Carter, Benson’s 5-foot-11, 165 pound, junior shooting-guard, produced another sterling performance by scoring 33 points in the Bunnies’ Metro Tournament semi-final victory over Bryan. “Is CJ Carter for real?” Is the question I asked in a previous edition of Hot Nebraska Athletes, after he scored 35 points in the semi-finals of the OPS Jamboree Tournament held earlier this month. Well, CJ Carter is proving to be very much for real, while he also makes a strong case for being considered among the best guards in the state.
Carter did not make it into our 2009/2010 Top 25 Nebraska High School Basketball Prospects rankings. But you can bet the house that if he continues on this pace he will have a promenent spot in our final post-season edition.
Tonight, Carter and his Bunnies will have their hands full when they meet Central in the finals of the Metro Holiday Tournament. The Eagles will most likely attempt to slow down the high-scoring Carter by assigning pesky, 6-1, point- guard Sean McGary to defend him. One of the better perimeter defenders in the Nebraska, McGary successfully utilized his talents last night to disturb Cole Martin on the way to a Eagles upset victory over previously unbeaten Creighton Prep. However, if the Eagles are successful with Carter, they will still have to contend with Avery Langford, who is just as capable of scoring in bunches. This should be a very exciting finals match up.
