Bo Pelini Fired, Finally!
Great news Cornuhuskers fans, 9-win seasons are not acceptable: Conference championships and national title runs are still the standard at NU. So Bo Pelini gets the boot, finally!
Since Bo Pelini’s ugly tirades directed towards Taylor Martinez and the officials at the Texas A&M game held at College Station, Texas on November 20, 2010, his days as head coach at NU were numbered. At the end of 2010 season the clock began ticking on Pelini’s career at Nebraska and it was only a matter of time before the University of Nebraska realized what many sports observers from around the country grew to understand: Bo Pelini is not a championship caliber head coach. In fact, maybe Bo Pelini is not best suited at all to being a college head football coach.
Why Bo Pelini was fired
Bo Pelini supporters say Pelini is good man, wins games, runs a clean program and takes care of his players. All of those things are true. But for those that are not supporters of Pelini they see a coach too afraid and/or unwilling to hire brighter minds than his to become coordinators and assistants, a coach that is often caught on camera, along the sidelines, going into an almost-out-of-control rage directed at one his players, coaches or an official to the point of losing sight of the big picture at hand—the game, a coach who has proven–time and time again–unable to prepare his troops to play at their best in the big games, a coach who is awkward at best when dealing with the media, and finally a coach that when asked about his coaching future says “We win a lot of games around here. A lot of programs would like to win 9 games every year.”
Wrong answer Bo.
It’s about championships at Nebraska and Bo knew that coming into the position. Accordingly, Pelini told the media and fans that winning championships is what he was about when NU hired him. NU gave Bo Pelini 7 years to bring home at least a conference championship trophy and he could not deliver. More importantly, absolutely nothing from Pelini’s past performance and/or his current assembled staff suggest he is capable of making the turn needed to bring home a trophy.
Expectations remain very high at Nebraska.
7.9 million dollars was money well spent to send Bo packing. And be assured that Nebraska’s big money boosters were in full support of seeing Pelini go. They were just tired of being embarrassed in big games on national TV and seeing a coach that many sports fans across the country viewed as an embarrassment to the Nebraska program because of his behavior along the sidelines and towards the media. The people who counted in this decision simply gave up hope in Pelini. That’s the bottom line.
I was among the first to praise Tom Osborne for hiring Bo Pelini In 2008. Now, count me among the grateful for Nebraska AD Shawn Eichorst firing Pelini in 2014. In so doing there is real hope of witnessing the rise of a Nebraska Cornhusker championship football team in the near future. Something Pelini was and is incapable of bringing to Nebraska.

Good Riddance to the jerk! He had his players’ minds so screwed up they were scared to make mistakes because they didn’t want to get embarrassed on national television by him screaming at them. Then he sounded so foolish anytime someone stuck a microphone in front of his deer in the headlights face. No program fires a coach with a winning record like Bo Pelini had unless there are some serious, serious issues going on. I agree with you that the AD did not act alone. A lot of the folks that matter also wanted Bo Pelini out. I do give Bo Pelini credit for stabilizing the program and getting in some good recruits. So now is the perfect time to hire someone who can actually win a conference championship and get into the playoffs. Scott Frost would be the perfect fit imo. Imagine the energy and types of recruits he could bring to Nebraska

Great blog & comment. As a mother with young son’s with dreams of playing college football, I wouldn’t allow my boys to be coached by such a subhuman being. He’s not worthy of being called a man let alone a head coach of a major college football team.
He shows his lack of class by not meeting with his players on campus but shows up at a local highschool.
Take your money and kiss our asses good bye looser! I don’t wish you well anywhere. Go coach ice hockey where players punching each other is allowed. You probably get off on that.

Andrea, what was up with that meeting? I agree it was ridiculous for him to be meeting his former players at a local high school. I heard he was blaming everyone but himself for being fired, too. But Bo Pelini got the last laugh right now with the AD hiring Mike Riley from Oregon State to be head coach. Never seen nothing like this circus.

Good question as to why meeting outside of a prescheduled players meeting? However it’s no surprise given his mental issues. Like many males, we females see his “little man syndrome”. When you have such insecurities like Bo does he compensates by his “I’m da man” behaviors, I.e., not answering intellegently at press conferences, yelling & screaming at players or referee’s. Not knowing how to make on the field “game day adjustments”. On & on.
Regards to him getting the last laugh? At least Mike Riley knows how to build a coaching staff. Unlike coach “Scooby-do”, who didn’t have the balls to hire & surround himself with coaches smarter than him. Riley has built four coaching staffs. It comes down to more than 9-3 seasons. My guess we will see sooner than seven years at least a conference Championship or two. Again, so long, “Scooby-do”. Go work on your manhood! For get about coaching until you grow a pair of real balls we women prefer!

Personal in the sense I’m an Alum & a long term season ticket holder with seats at first in the student section. My parents & grand parents are Alum’s and I remember going to the games when Dr Tom was coaching as a young girl. Didn’t understand football but it’s been a long time standing tradition in my family. Die hard Husker fans! Our family has passion & love for the Husker program. We don’t know Bo or his staff but we do have friends & associates within the Alumni Foundation since we are still very active in it.
People talk & we see. Many have always believed Bo was a poor choice and should have been gone along time ago. He hasn’t represented Nebraskan well or our traditions of winning championships. If he couldn’t get it done in four years why hold on? We gave him seven & we seen the results. Forget the 9-3 & bowl trips. Where is the dignity & respect of these young kids? It wasn’t shown on the sidelines even after he was warned. He still did it. Add to the fact he had NO answers to continued losses to top 15 ranked teams or better…he was exposed. I look forward to the future & it’s my hope the new coach cleans house. Some of Bo’s coaches are respectable people. The Coordinators made the most money yet refused or declined to be interviewed by the media. Classless! I’m just glad we are moving on.
