Cody Rush: Less Than a Second Away from All-time Best 400 Meter
On Saturday (May 5), reigning boys 400 meter all-class gold medalist Cody Rush broke the 48 second barrier at the Central Conference Track & Field Meet. Rush’s 47.7 time becomes the third fastest ever recorded by a Nebraska high school boy and only the fifth time a Nebraska high school sprinter has run under 48 seconds in the event. In addition, Rush broke the 35-year-old Class B record of 48.20 set by Mike Cielocha (Columbus Scotus—1977).
Only Lincoln Pius X’s P.J. Grosserodes 47.25 in 1997 and Bellevue East’s Lukas Hulett’s 46.98 in 2006 have been faster. Hulett went on to become an all-American at Nebraska University.
This fall Rush will also don the Husker red as a collegian and every indication points to him having the kind of success at that level enjoyed by Hulett.
Between now and the end of the Class B 400 meter finals at the state meet, can the Grand Island Northwest senior break the 47 second barrier and best the standard set by Lukas Hulett?
I think Rush has a very, very good shot to own the record.
Over the past two seasons Rush has been the most consistent boy 400 meter sprinter in Nebraska—steadily putting up sub-49 times. More importantly, his relaxed and loose style of running along with his long fluid frame makes him the ideal candidate for the task. Come to think of it—Rush’s style is somewhat similar to Hulett’s high school form. Cody is just a bit looser.
Rush is less than a second from being the best ever Nebraska high school 400m sprinter. It sounds easy but—nothing is easy about the 400 meter.

Good question. I did not see that one anywhere. But if that is legit he is the sixth to ever go under 48. I know he could not have done it last week at the Centennial Conference meet because his groin was bothering him and he did not run the 400. So when? That would also be a Class C record. Remember they had him running a 10.5 100 last year, too. Don’t get me wrong because Levi can run!!! If his groin is right at state he could easily bust a sub-48.

Well I asked around and it was a misprint because I’m sure you saw it earlier in the year that he ran the 48.8, so when they added the .24 they put 48.04 instead of 49.04.
