State Meet Preview Boys Distance Runs and Field Events: Primed for All-Time Chart

Boys Distance Runs

800 Meter—get up early on Saturday and don’t be late! Because the most exciting finish of the 2011 state meet could take place in the final heat of the boys Class A 800m. The 800m heats are scheduled to begin at 9:30 A.M. and the Class A final heat has all the earmarks of a classic all-time chart finish.

Lining up will be Benson junior Mach Dojiok, he enters the contest with a near all-time chart season leading time (1:54.30) and Lincoln North Star sophomore Mo Hamdan. If you recall these two battled to a thrilling finish earlier in the season at the Benson Invite. Mach got the better of Mo on that day. But these two won’t be the only ones with a chance to claim the big medal. Kearney’s Jacob Olsen owns the second best time of the season (1:54.90) and the talented junior distance runner has also posted the season’s best 1600m (4:18.17).

1600 Meter—Jacob Olsen is the class of this event. Unless he is hurt, falls on his face or one of the other competitors digs deep for a phenomenal PR—he wins. Start time: 2:00 P.M., Saturday.

3200 Meter—If Fremont‘s Danny Aldaba runs like he did at the Millard South Invite—nobody beats him!

The sophomore blew away a field that included last year’s 3200m ACG medalist Marshall Anderson. His winning time of 9:29.30 remains a season’s best that no one has come close to.

Anderson’s 2010 ACG time was 9:28.03: his best time this season is 9:44.71 Maybe Olson has been saving his best for the state meet. If so—and Aldaba brings his best to Burke—this could be one heck of a finish. Start time 9:00 A.M, Friday.

Boys Field Events

Shot Put—in the MHN Track and Field Season Preview it was stated that this event would be “wide open” and it still remains so. Nearly a dozen boys have thrown over 56’. The season’s best is Kearney’s Zach Maloley’s 58-11 ^1/2, and class of 2012 Iowa football recruit Mike Shoff (Cambridge) is right behind him at 58-11. Discus —2010 ACG medal winner Brady Rutt should retain his title. The senior form Hastings has been remarkably consistent all season. The distance of his season leading throw of 187-02 is less than 7 feet away from entry into the all-time charts—that’s close in this event. Long Jump—Omaha Central’s Ted Lampkin leads the pack, coming in with a season’s best jump of 23-3^¼, but roughly a half a dozen others have jumped at least 22-10: Justin English, Grand Island; Sarael Duncan, Omaha Northwest; Sam Shaw, Aurora; Matt Chitwood, McCook and Levi Gipson, Lincoln Christian.

Triple Jump—Lampkin would have to have a very bad day not to come out on top here. His season leading district jump of 47-3^3/4 is over 2 feet more than the next best jump. Start time: Friday—click NSAA meet schedule link below for class times.

High Jump—Omaha Benson’s Jer’rell Moore’s 6-9 is the best jump of the year, however, that came early on in the season. Coming down the stretch Moore has struggled getting past 6-7. Keep an eye out for North Platte’s Micah Lauber (6-8) and Kearney’s Tyler Shields, (6-7). Start time: Friday— click NSAA meet schedule link below for class times.

Pole Vault— earlier this month, Minden’s Craig Driver sailed into 5^th place on the all-time chart, becoming only the 7^th Nebraska high school boy to clear 16-0. But Driver will compete against a strong field that, among others, includes last year’s co-ACG medalist Christian Sanderfer (Lincoln Southwest) and Beau Simmons (Aurora). Weather permitting, fans could be treated to another all-time chart performance and/or state meets record.

Current Nebraska University kicker/punter Brett Maher (pictured at left) holds the Class A and state meet record at 16-2, set in 2008. I had a good seat to see that one—“Awesome!” Start time: for Class A is Friday, 9:00 A.M.— click NSAA meet schedule link below for other class days and times.
