Bo Pelini Looked Like a Nut in Husker Loss to Texas A&M
Somebody Needs To Tell Bo He Looks Like a Nut–Before He Cracks
Last night as I watched the Nebraska vs. Texas A&M football game and caught the numerous camera shots of an irate Bo Pelini screaming at officials, players and his coaching staff I couldn’t help but be reminded of legendary Ohio State head football coach Woody Hayes.
You see I grew up in Columbus, Ohio and my father played for Hayes at OSU back in the ‘50’s. Consequently, I had the fortune to attend many of the Buckeye home games and to hang around the sidelines and the training facilities, and to hear stories from my father and his friends and other former Buckeye players about some of the more bizarre Woody Hayes temper tantrums that occurred throughout his coaching career.
Woody Hayes had a long, long history of infamous outburst that sometimes included striking, grabbing, and throwing things at his players and his assistant coaches. Yet everyone around Hayes placated his outburst. Even the media would laugh and joke about his sideline antics “Oh that’s just Woody” they would say. That’s just how he is. It’s how he gets his team motivated.
Unfortunately, you can also count me in as one of those people that bought into all that “Oh it’s just Woody “stuff too. But by the time I really became cognizant about the world, Woody was an unintimidating, toothless, gray-haired, chubby, old man in his mid-to-late 50’s who wore glasses short sleeve shirts and a tie. His outbursts were comical given his deportment. That is until the day when Woody struck that Clemson football player and tried to grab him by the neck at the 1978 Gator Bowl.
All of us who were around Woody should also share in the blame for how his career ended, because no one really checked him on his ugly behavior that began from the time he first started coaching back in the 1940’s. Besides, up until the ’78 incident most folks tolerated outlandish behaviors from coaches as long as the team won. Nowadays the sports world has matured in its thinking and it doesn’t look very kindly on those kinds of antics and outburst.
Bo Pelini is from Ohio and he even played for the Ohio State Buckeyes; ironically, his first year at OSU (’87) is the year Woody past away. Nonetheless, I’m sure Pelini grew up watching or at least hearing about some of Woody’s’ sideline tirades too. But Bo Pelini you are no Woody Hayes: I’m not laughing when I see one of your blowups. You are not an old fat man with glasses and no teeth and wearing a shortsleeve shirt with a tie. You are a healthy angry-looking man wearing a sweatshirt that looks like he could still kick some butt. Oh no Bo! When I see those eyes of yours start to bulge, and those veins start to pop out the side of your neck and the spit start to fly, I’m thinking “this guy looks nuts!” This guy is making $2 mil a year and he looks like a raving mad lunatic that hates the world.
I’ve seen a lot of coaches get mad but Bo takes the cake! Bo Pelini looks the craziest of them all:
- I’m watching the camera shot of Bo on the sideline screaming and poking his finger into the chest of his star player Taylor Martinez, who darn near just broke his leg. He walks away from Martinez for a second and then jumps right back in his face for more. This looks ugly!
- “It just keeps getting worse,” I’m saying to myself. Look at how he is talking to that female sideline reporter as he walks in for halftime. This is not funny!
- Now I’m watching Bo get up in the face of an official, screaming–throwing what appears to be F bombs at him–while he darn near hits him in the face with his play sheet.
- What? The game is over and the first thing Bo tries to do is run after the officials?

That’s just your style Bo Pelini? That’s just how you are? That’s acceptable?
I know his players love him—just like my Dad and all his friends loved Woody Hayes. But Bo somebody needs to tell you “You are no Woody Hayes.” At least I hope not.
Remember Bo that you are headed to the Big Ten where they have seen this act play out before—for nearly three decades. And everyone remembers how it ended.

i dont know who you are. i googled the term ‘bo pelini on loss’ and found your site. ARE YOU A PUSSY OR WHAT?? it was plain to see nebraska got homered by the officials last nite. not 1, not 2, but multiple bad calls which influenced the outcome of the game. these were aggregious calls and leads me to believe it was an edict handed down from big 12 offices instructing the officials to punish the cornhuskers in the texas and texas a and m games. have you seen the replay of #83 grabbing #81 pinching the back of his leg or his junk leading to cotton kicking to stop #83? this led to 30 yards of penalties. OMG. the flag picked up for interference on a nd m and the bad call on dinnard when fuller of a and m clearly pushed him. throw in the late hit on osborne in which he was in the air 3 ft from the qb when the infraction was called. pelini has a right to be incensed. thankfully nebraska will leave the small 10 conference, formerly big 12, and leave this ridiculous entity behind. all the bad calls likely cost nebraska a minimum of 7-10 points and gave the aggies 3

The Huskers Lost!! Get over it.. I am sick and tired of Husker Fans making excuses everytime they lose… They are always the best team in the nation,,, and if they lose ,it was the refs, the wind, the rain, they just didn’t play good.. My god.. Nebraska was so over rated to begin with… I have watched most the Husker games (most of their opponets are cupcakes) South Dakota State had 2 touchdowns taken away from them by the refs, they literally ran all over the Huskers.. Iowa State out played you, and should have won, yet all I heard were the excuses why the game was close…
Now you are making excuses for Polini acting like a complete fool ……… This man better get some common sense and fast… The big ten refs will not throw a flag on such behavior.. they will throw his ass out of the game!

You are an idiot it is obvious that the big 12 is out to get Nebraska they are a bunch of sore sports. This has been very clear in several games. All I can say to the big 12 is good riddance!!!!!!

I read the three previouos post. You are obviously missing the point! I don’t give a F if your making $2 million, or you’re the freaking president of the USA. Bo didn’t treat his players or ref’s with ANY dignity! Think about it…….If you were fighting a war would you give your life to a leader who you don’t respect? Who shows no respect for you? You got problems with me during a game, bench me, call me out in the locker room. Damn…treat me like a young man. This post isn’t about NE record, loses, etc. Its about a coach who’s about to loose future recruits, other players and maybe his JOB if he doesn’t get a grip! You think the AD didn’t have a conversation with him? Show respect to your program by your behaviors. It goes with coaching as well as players too!

You nailed it! Pelini made the program look bad with his antics last night. It makes you wonder why players would want to play for him. Maybe Woody Hayes influeced his character growing up in Ohio. I don’t know. But after this do you still believe the Huskers will win the Big Ten title next year?

Pelini: First off let me make it crystal clear that I like Bo Pelini. If I didn’t like him or what he has done for the Husker football program I would have never written this article. I’m just trying to send a message. Those wise enough to see it will understand it. As for my predictions of a Big Ten Title for the Huskers in 2011–Everything is up in the air right now. It will all depend on how this Pelini-Martinez thing plays out. Dr. Tom will be the key to all of this.
