2011 Nebraska HS Track & Field Preview: New Boy Stars to Emerge

 Ted Lampkin, Omaha Central, Senior—named Nebraska’s Gatorade Boys Track and Field Athlete of the Year, he won triple jump all-class gold with a PR leap of 48’ 2-3/4” and won the Class A long jump title (missed taking all-class gold by less than two inches). He also finished 3rd in the Class A 100 meter. His PR triple jump and PR long jump (24′ 4-3/4”) put him in range of challenging state records. If he competes this year and stays healthy he could rack-up all-class gold in the two jumps and the 100 meter. Lampkin is headed to Iowa State on a football Scholarship. |
 Daniel Davie, Beatrice, Senior—in his first season of high school track this 6-foot, 180 pound Michigan native and Husker football recruit bolted to fame by winning both the 100 and 200 meter all-class golds. Davie has the natural speed and mechanics to run significantly lower times in both events (current 100 meter PR is 10.64; 200 meter PR is 21.74 ). If he sincerely competes in 2011 look for him to at least post some all-time marks along the way—of course, weather and health permitting. |
 Marshall Anderson, Papillion-La Vista, Junior—as a sophomore he won all-class gold in 3200 meter run and the silver in the 1600. A strong runner form start to finish, his PR 3200 time of 9:28.02 is still a bit of a ways off of the all-time best and state record 8:55.55, set by Kearney’s Colby Wissel in 2004.But mind you, he still has two more seasons left to challenge the marks. |
 Beau Simmons (pictured at left) Aurora, SeniorVan Sanderfer, Lincoln Southwest , Senior —last year these two juniors shared the all-class gold medal in the pole vault by catapulting themselves over the bar at 15’ 2” . Which one will make more headway in 2011? And will either one manage to clear the bar at 16 feet or more? |
 Brady Rutt, Hastings, Senior— as a junior he spun and tossed the discus 177’ to win all-class gold. The strongman also finished 8thoverall in the shot put with a heave of 53’ 11” The question is will Rutt be able to hold on to his title with such a strong field of returning discus throwers? |
 Nehemiah Wilkins, Boys Town, Senior—the Class B state champion in the 110 meter high hurdle and 300 meter Intermediate hurdle returns for his senior year to compete in a field devoid of top hurdlers. That’s not to say that no one will emerge, but for right now the Northwest Missouri State football recruit is a favorite to win both all-class golds. |
 Blake Micek, Hastings St. Cecilia, Junior—won the Class C 100 meter title at state as a sophomore. His 100 time was an impressive 10.823, This kid can fly! And if he just improves a little over last year he will prove to be a major challenge to anyone trying to claim the 100 all-class gold in 2011. |
 Ryne Reeves, Crete, Senior—he was the 2010 Class C shot put Champion. This highly touted Husker football recruit underwent shoulder surgery over the winter, so he may choose to continue his rehab rather than compete for gold in 2011. |
| Other Names and Faces to Watch for in 2011 High Jump: with the departure of Omaha Central ‘s two-time All-Class champion and 7-foot leaper Deverell Biggs, this event is wide open. Perhaps one of these seniors will be next in line for all-class gold: Tyler Shields, Kearney, Jer’rell Moore, Omaha Benson Cody Sullivan, Norris Mitchell Westberry, Omaha Central Tyson Rowse, Norfolk Kamal Harris, Lincoln Southwest Long Jump Jordan Nelson, Omaha Burke,Junior Tiras Bolton, Omaha Westside, Senior Triple Jump Terry Girgsby, Omaha North, Junior Shot Put: This event is completely up for grabs in 2011 Drew Staskiewicz, Millard North, Senior (signed with University of Missouri Track and Field) 200 Meter Dominique Hawkins, Bellevue West, Senior 400 Meter: Two-Time All-Class Champ Brandon White is gone. This event is wide open, but the field of competitors could produce some nice times in 2011.
