Wrestling Fans At Burke Miss Out On Match Between Two of the Top Heavyweight Athletes In Region

Nebraska Class A record-breaking QB Bronson Marsh.

Well, alright! Maybe my source who said last week that the Huskers were going to offer Bronson Marsh a gray shirt turned out to be right after all: Huskersillustrated.com’s Sean Callahan is reporting that the Huskers are planning to meet with Marsh this evening to discuss a gray shirt—stay tuned!

So What is a Gray Shirt?

In short: It means that a player will sign a letter of intent in February but he will not practice with the team or attend classes at the school giving him the gray shirt until the second semester. His five year clock will not start until he begins classes in the second semester (next January).

His scholarship will not count against the school’s total allowable per year (25) until next year—in Marsh’s case the class of 2011.

Nebraska’s Ron Coleman vs Iowa’s Matt Hoch

It would have been a great treat for fans who attended this past weekend’s Omaha Burke Wrestling Invitational to see these two talented athletes grapple. However, the Omaha World-Herald reported that undefeated and three-time Nebraska state wrestling champ Ron Coleman of Omaha North did not wrestle in the meet because he was “out getting healthy for the stretch run.” On the flip side: Iowa’s Harlan Cyclone heavyweight Matt Hoch, a 6-5 , 230 lb, DE football prospect, did wrestle in the meet. Hoch, who has multiple D-1A offers, is committed to the University of Missouri. He went on to beat Norfolk’s Aaron Wichman 13-4 to win the 285lb title at the Burke invitational.

Nick Mizaur, Creighton Prep—The 6-foot, 200 lb RB/DB picked up his second D-1AA Ivy league offer from Brown University to go along with his offer from Princeton. Both schools are looking at him as a running back. In addition, according to his farther Nick Mizaur Sr., Boston College and Notre Dame have both offered Nick preferred walk-on status, slotting him at safety. Man, it will be interesting to see where he ends up, because he has a very strong chance of having a D-1A offer come his way too. I mean, how do you pass up an Ivy league school education? Well, I guess if you’re set on playing among the best of the best, you go D-1A if the opportunity comes your way. But if it doesn’t—Nick is in a no lose situation here for sure! Even better, Mizaur won’t have a lot of spare time to sit around and worry about all this, since he is currently immersed in in his quest for a state wrestling championship title. Quentin Urban, Millard South–Selected to Lincoln Journal Star Super-State First Team and Omaha World-Herald All-Nebraska First Team as a junior. The 5-foot-10-inch 180-pounder is currently doing damage on the hardwood as a guard for the Patriots. Ron Coleman, Omaha North–The  6-foot, 250 pound, two-time Super-State and All-Nebraska First Team football player will be going for his fourth consecutive Class A state wrestling title. The question is what sport will he end up pursuing in college?  Caleb Steffensmeier, Creighton Prep–The 5-11 guard has the reigning Class A Champs firing on all cylinders again and looking for a repeat. Let’s just hope that if the Jr. Jays get there it will be a little more entertaining than the brick fest at last year’s finals –if you know what I mean. Sean McGary, Omaha Central—The 6-foot-2-inch Eagle guard is proving to be a serious scoring threat this year as well as a solid floor general. Although the Eagles are off to a shaky 3-2 start, look for them, in the end, to be to be in the hunt for the state Class A title. An excellent student, also look for McGary to have some colleges calling on his talent. CJ Carter, Omaha Benson—the 6-foot junior put up some huge numbers in a couple of games already this season, including the 35 points he scored in helping the Bunnies to victory in the finals of the OPS Jamboree. Is he for real? Austin Kaczor, Ewing–The 6-foot-4-inch, 215 pound–Class D–player managed to garner Lincoln Journal Star Super-State First Team and Omaha World-Herald All-Nebraska First Team football honors. He also is a returniing All-State basketball player. Moreover, Kaczor is still very much in the hunt for a late D-1A football offer. One can only wonder how his football and basketball performances would be matching up against Class A or B talent on a weekly basis. Mike Gesell, South Sioux City–Saving the best for last; how much hotter can a sophomore athlete be? The 6-1 guard already has five  D-1A basketball offers: Creighton, Iowa, Iowa State, Nebraska and Northern Iowa. Is he that good?

   The annual May college evaluation period of  high school football prospects  is just around the corner. Class of 2010 football prospects who are serious about playing college football are strongly advised to have your highlight and game films ready by the evaluation period and/or no later than the end of this school year. You will want to have film available to give to coaches at any spring or summer camp  you–hopefully– plan on attending.

   This past Thursday, I did something I never did before; I attended the Nebraska High School State Wrestling Tournament—boy have I been missing out!

   The venue (Qwest Center) alone is enough to impress, but when you factor in the significant number of fans that somehow managed to attended an—early–morning, weekday, first round session and you get to experience the precision in which the event was ran, and top it all off by getting  a chance to see some outstanding athletes and a few of the best high school wrestlers in state history do their thing; well, it makes for a very enjoyable time. Below are some of the athletes that impressed me the most:

Alex Bridgeford 140 lb—The nations No. 2 ranked 140 pound high school wrestler out of Omaha Burke high school had a phenomenal high school career that includes smashing the all-time career takedown record and three state titles.

“Watching Alex Bridgeford wrestle is like watching Michael Jordan play basketball at the top of his game!”

Before Bridgeford even hits the mat, you know by the way that he carries himself that there is something special about the kid, who exudes confidence out of every pore of his body. I feel fortunate for the opportunity to have seen a live state tournament performance of perhaps the best wrestler in the history of Nebraska. Yea, he is that good!

Ronald “THE LEGEND” Coleman, 285lb— “Perhaps a legend in the making” is how I described him in our 2008 Preseason All -Metro Football Watch List.  Now let’s drop the “perhaps.”  A heavyweight champion as a freshman? Ridiculous! And now he has three state titles: two heavyweight titles and now a super heavy title to go along with his 2008 Nebraska Super State First Team football honors. This kid is a beast! What’s Pelini and company waiting for?

Josh Kage, 285 lb—He almost upset The Legend in the finals, losing by just one point (3-2). Despite the loss, Kage is still in the running for the best boys athlete in the state. The North Dakota football bound Kage is also one of the best shot put and disc throwers in the Nebraska. Folks, this young man is just getting started.

Cody Hobbs, 171lb—The 2008/2009 Class A 171lb Champion is only a junior and the Creighton Prep fullback and D-1 prospect looked every bit as impressive on the mat as he does running the ball on the football field.

Nick Mizaur, 189lb—Oh, what a way to end the tournament with a semi-final round DQ when you were ahead. Nevertheless, Mizuar is one impressive athlete, look out for him on the gridiron in 2009.

Austin Williams, 160lb—The Burke junior, had a very strong season wrestling at 160, even though he had to shed some serious weight to get there. Yet, the Bulldog linebacker has the frame, toughness and athleticism and the proven ability on the field to garner some recruiting attention.

    Unfortunately,  there was one big-time junior that I had anticipated seeing on the mat, but Creighton Prep D-1 defensive tackle prospect, Jeff Uher, reportedly broke his leg during a practice session on the day before the state tournament.
