The digital world we live in is truly amazing. I’m late to the game on Twitter, but I’m giving it a shot. It’s another new technology that MHN is implementing like this post which is being written on my mobile phone. I’ve had the capability to do it for quite some time–until now, just never pulled the trigger.

You can access the myHitNews1 Twitter on our site by clicking on its tab at the top of the page. Of course you can also access it from anywhere as long as you have an account.

I’ll be giving our new-to-me Twitter and mobile post technologies more of a whirl later tonight at the game–if I can manage to do so in between taking shots of the action.

Chris Reed – The Omaha Central heavy duty thrower pumped out a 60’ 2” shot throw at the Burke Relays on Monday. According to an excellent Omaha World-Herald article written by Stu Pospisil (click here to read article), Reed is looking to break the shot put records held by former Omaha Central and Iowa University great, Larry Station. Much respect to Reed if he can accomplish the feat. Station was not only a tremendous shot and discus thrower in high school, he was also one of the very best football players to ever come out of Nebraska. Last fall the hard hitting linebacker was honored as one of Iowa University’s all-time greatest football players.

Ted Lampkin – This Eagle may be the hottest athlete in Nebraska: This past winter Lampkin ran a head-turning and eye-wiping 4.37 40 yard dash at the U.S. Army Combine. Soon thereafter he received offers from Iowa State and Kansas State. Lampkin is just warming up; he popped a 45’ 9” triple jump at the Burke Relays. There is no telling how far he can jump if he is already hitting nearly 46’ this early in the season. One thing for sure– Lampkin is positioning himself to become the No. 1 Nebraska high school football prospect in the class of 2011.

Amanda Brown – The senior from Lincoln Southwest leaped 5’ 6’ to take the high jump blue ribbon at the Nebraska Wesleyan Indoor Invite. Brown finished fourth in Class A at the State Meet last year with a jump of 5’ 4”. Oh, the winning jump was 5’ 6”. Brown looks to be the leading contender for Class A gold in the high jump.

Hitting on all 6 of his field goal attempts and dropping in all 7 of his free-throws, Martin’s only miss of the night was from behind the arc, where he found the bottom of the net on 7 out of 8 tries. That’s epic, brother.
Track & Field Best for 2010

Speaking of all-time performances: Indoor track and field season is already upon us and the outdoor season is just around the corner. Last year we saw a significant number of boys and girls etch their names onto the all-time top ten chart for their event(s). Some of the athletes setting those marks–even breaking a couple of state records–will return to the oval and field this season:

LaQue Moen-Davis is now an Omaha North Viking.

LaQue Moen Davis–The Omaha Central sophomore sensation hit all-time marks in the long jump, 300 meter hurdles and 100 meter hurdles. She set the state record in the triple jump. Now a junior, Moen-Davis attends Omaha North. How will her move to North affect her performance this year?

Morgan Woitzel and Claire Nichols–Millard South’s two freshmen phenoms from last year will take the girls 400 meter event to a whole new level before their careers are finished. Woitzel set a girls class A 400 meter record last year and Nichols was the 2009 State Meet All-Gold 400 meter champ. The two teammates will be duking it out again. Will the sophomores set new record marks this year?

Bethany DeLong– The Laurel Public District 54 sprinter and long jumper owns all-time marks in the 100, 200 and long jump. Can the Class C senior finally claim All-Gold at this year’s state meet?

Stephon Washington–Omaha Burke’s three-time State Meet 300 meter hurdle champion owns all-time marks in the event. However, a football injury he suffered last season could hamper his 2010 efforts on the track. If healthy enough, he could set a state record in the 300 and be a top contender in any of the sprint races.

Tyler Wullenwaber–The Nebraska walk-on football player from Centennial hit the all-time charts by leaping over 24 feet in the long jump. Can he make it to 25 or better?

Radlell Nared and Thomas Hodges –The Omaha North sprinters were two of the best last year, Nared won State Meet All-Gold in the 100 and Hodges was runner-up. They may not have hit the all-time charts last season but both seniors are capable of doing just that in 2010.

Brandon White–The Westside 400 meter sprinter was the 2009 State Meet All-Gold 400 meter champ. White showed enough form and time (an electronic 49.07 at the state meet) to contend for some all-time marks this year.

On paper this track season looks like it will produce a slew of all-time top ten marks and some state record performances. Like always–weather will greatly influence the types of marks that we will see this season. We can only hope for some good early spring weather so that these outstanding track and field athletes can truly shine.

Note: Indoor track meets available to high school participants in 2010 began in January. A couple of meets are scheduled this month and several more in March. Unfortunately, not a lot of Nebraska high school track and field athletes participate in these indoor meets. The earliest outdoor meets available are set to begin in late March.

Bronson Marsh–Millard South’s 6-foot, 200lb QB is selected to the Omaha World-Herald 2000s Nebraska All-Decade Football Team. That’s quite an achievement based on the quality of the players that made the team. Click link to here to see OWH All-Decade Team. The four-year starter and Class A record-breaking performer is very much deserving of the honor. Let’s hope a D-1A school will recognize his athletic prowess and reward him with a scholarship.

Yusef Wade—The 5-10, 175 Lincoln North Star ATH is picking up late attention from a couple of new D-1A programs and is still being seriously evaluated by two others. In my book, Wade is the best all-around skill position prospect in the class of 2010. The kid is both physically and mentally tough and has very good quickness and burst speed, outstanding balance and can excel at multiple positions—DB, RB, WR and Returns. His final high school highlight video does a good job of illustrating these talents. Check out Wade’s new video here. And remember: high school prospects in any sport can submit their video links to myHitNews for posting to our site by sending the link to myhitnews@yahoo.com.

Ted Lampkin–Central’s outstanding multi-sport athlete reportedly left the Eagles’ basketball team last week. It’s always sad to see a kid make a decision like that–but the 5-foot-10, 170lb junior, who also participates in football and track, is only a teenager. Hopefully, the young man can work things out and find his way back onto the team. If not, I hope that he will realize that there are only so many second chances in life before you find yourself sitting somewhere you truly don’t want to be. And Teddy you have too much talent to be in that place.

Metro Holiday Basketball Tournament Teams—The teams still in hunt for the title resume play today with the Central vs Bryan game looking like the hot ticket on the bracket. Will Deverell Biggs, Sean McGary and company be able to hold off Galen Gullie, Ben Imig and the rest of the crew to advance to the semi finals?

Nick Mizaur, Creighton Prep—The 6-foot, 200 lb RB/DB picked up his second D-1AA Ivy league offer from Brown University to go along with his offer from Princeton. Both schools are looking at him as a running back. In addition, according to his farther Nick Mizaur Sr., Boston College and Notre Dame have both offered Nick preferred walk-on status, slotting him at safety. Man, it will be interesting to see where he ends up, because he has a very strong chance of having a D-1A offer come his way too. I mean, how do you pass up an Ivy league school education? Well, I guess if you’re set on playing among the best of the best, you go D-1A if the opportunity comes your way. But if it doesn’t—Nick is in a no lose situation here for sure! Even better, Mizaur won’t have a lot of spare time to sit around and worry about all this, since he is currently immersed in in his quest for a state wrestling championship title.

Quentin Urban, Millard South–Selected to Lincoln Journal Star Super-State First Team and Omaha World-Herald All-Nebraska First Team as a junior. The 5-foot-10-inch 180-pounder is currently doing damage on the hardwood as a guard for the Patriots.

Ron Coleman, Omaha North–The 6-foot, 250 pound, two-time Super-State and All-Nebraska First Team football player will be going for his fourth consecutive Class A state wrestling title. The question is what sport will he end up pursuing in college?

Caleb Steffensmeier, Creighton Prep–The 5-11 guard has the reigning Class A Champs firing on all cylinders again and looking for a repeat. Let’s just hope that if the Jr. Jays get there it will be a little more entertaining than the brick fest at last year’s finals –if you know what I mean.

Sean McGary, Omaha Central—The 6-foot-2-inch Eagle guard is proving to be a serious scoring threat this year as well as a solid floor general. Although the Eagles are off to a shaky 3-2 start, look for them, in the end, to be to be in the hunt for the state Class A title. An excellent student, also look for McGary to have some colleges calling on his talent.

CJ Carter, Omaha Benson—the 6-foot junior put up some huge numbers in a couple of games already this season, including the 35 points he scored in helping the Bunnies to victory in the finals of the OPS Jamboree. Is he for real?

Austin Kaczor, Ewing–The 6-foot-4-inch, 215 pound–Class D–player managed to garner Lincoln Journal Star Super-State First Team and Omaha World-Herald All-Nebraska First Team football honors. He also is a returniing All-State basketball player. Moreover, Kaczor is still very much in the hunt for a late D-1A football offer. One can only wonder how his football and basketball performances would be matching up against Class A or B talent on a weekly basis.

Mike Gesell, South Sioux City–Saving the best for last; how much hotter can a sophomore athlete be? The 6-1 guard already has five D-1A basketball offers: Creighton, Iowa, Iowa State, Nebraska and Northern Iowa. Is he that good?

The Boys Metro Holiday Basketball Tournament kicks off this weekend on Saturday, December 19th. The tournament is usally a very good barometer as to what team(s) will have the depth and breath to make the annual pilgrimage to the state playoffs in Lincoln. As it stands, Caleb Steffensmeier and Cole Martin have the Creighton Prep Jr. Jays looking like the leaders of the pack and on their way to a repeat–but not by very much. Several other teams like Bell East, Burke, Bryan, Benson and Central could gel their way deep into a state playoff run.

The Metro Tournament has 16 boys basketball teams entered–but let’s get for real! Only half of the teams entered have a legitimate chance to come out on top in this tournament. So Teams like North, Northwest and some other bad to mediocre basketball teams are not considered in this poll. Wait now. That doesn’t mean that one of the “bad” teams can’t pull off an upset or two–but win the whole thing. Nah. Therefore, after whitlling away the pretenders from the contenders–the poll locacted at the top of the left sidebar–reflects the teams that have at least a player’s shot at taking home the Boys Metro Holiday Tournament Trophy.
