This past Wednesday, Millard South’s Morgan Woitzel signed a letter of intent to attend Nebraska.

Wotizel tied the state meet 400 meter mark (55.67, 6th best all-time) as a freshman and during her a sophomore year she nearly entered the all time chart in the 800 meter.

Unfortunately, Woitzel was sidelined with a hip injury for the better part of her junior year campaign; however, she was able to return to the track in time to help contribute to the Patriots 1600 state meet all-class gold relay team.

If she manages to stay health this year the girls 400m and 800m could really be electrifying.

Millard South Track Star Seeking to Put Exclamation Mark on Outstanding Prep Career

Millard South state champion sprinter Clara Nichols prepares to settle into the blocks for her last high school track season.

Millard South state champion sprinter Clara Nichols has chosen Oklahoma State University as the place where she will continue her academic pursuits and track career.

Nichols, who blazed to a state record-breaking time of 55.05 in the 400 meter at last year’s state meet, had numerous division 1 suitors; however, she eventually narrowed down the list and took official visits to Nebraska, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Kansas and Oklahoma State.

Nichols gave several reasons why she finally picked the Stillwater, Oklahoma campus over the other schools: “My academic meeting was by far the most informative – I plan to major in dietetics. And I know I will develop into an outstanding 800m runner there by training with a teammate who was 2nd at outdoor nationals as a freshman last year.

That future teammate Nichols referred to is Natalja Piliusina, the 2011 Big 12 800 meter outdoor champion and OSU school record holder.

The icing on the cake that sealed the deal for Clara to attend OSU: “I felt included in the team almost like I was a part of it already,” she said.

So ring one up for OSU head track and field coach Dave Smith and his staff as well as the rest of Nichols’ soon-to-be Cowgirl teammates. Because your team is getting a focused, determined, quality athlete with a lot of upside that has the ability to produce meet points right away. Yet before Nichols heads off to Stillwater she has one more high school season to finish.

The Legacy

Nichols has already solidified her position as greatest high school girl 400 meter sprinter in Nebraska history: Firstly, winning the all-class gold in the event as a freshman and then setting the all time mark as a junior. During her run up the Nebraska high school all-time best chart, Nichols has won 3 consecutive Class A 400m state titles, 2 all-class gold 400m medals, 1 all-class gold 200m medal and 2 all-class gold medals as a member of the Patriots 1600m relay team. Plus 2 all-class silver medals apiece in the 100m and 200m.

So what’s left on the plate for Clara? Hmm, how about holding the mantle of Nebraska’s greatest ever all-around girl sprinter?

Well, after considering her tremendous performance at last year’s state meet where she won all-class gold in the 200m and 400m and a silver in the 100m – Nichols definitely has to be in the conversation when it comes to debates about who is the best ever Nebraska high school girl sprinter. And remember it took a state record performance by Omaha North’s Breuanna McCarty (now running for the Huskers) to keep Nichols from sweeping the sprints in 2011.

The great Sarah Lyons (Omaha Brownell-Talbot) is the last girl to sweep the girls sprints events at state. Lyons, who continued her career at Rice, managed to pull off the rare and difficult feat two years in a row (2005 and 2006). Incredible!

Can the Patriot Golden Girl better last year’s marks – break her own state record and/or possibly even sweep the sprints at state in 2012?

Determination, competition, health and the weather will all play critical roles in the outcome. However, if Nichols and her team of coaches can bring her along as brilliantly as they did last season – and for her entire career for that matter – we can all be in for another treat at this year’s state meet.

The Patriot coaches that Nichols credits with her success on the track at Millard South are head coach Justin Llewellyn and assistants Phyllis Schroeder and Josef Philippi.

“I think I will be running pretty much the same events this year, with a couple 800s here and there,” Nichols said in response to her plans for the upcoming high school track season.

Now considering that OSU is looking at her as a 400m and 800m performer, I wonder if we may even see her post some all-time Nebraska marks in the 800m this year. Just sayin’.

As true an athletic warrior as I’ve ever seen (boy or girl); we have yet to see Clara Nichols’ finest hour.

During the past four years, I’ve immensely enjoyed covering Nebraska’s top high school athletes through the myHitNews.com blog. However, due to current obligations as well as the development of future projects – at the present time – my free time is very limited. Therefore, I made a decision late last month to shutdown the site.

In hindsight, considering the wealth of information, articles, videos and images collected on MHN and the abundance of Google and other search engine hits for this information, I would be doing a disservice to many of the athletes, coaches, administrators and past contributors that have been featured in some shape or fashion on this site.

As a result I have decided not to shutdown MHN.

Yet to keep things fresh I need your help.

I need contributing authors who are willing to write occasional, weekly, and/or daily articles. Even onetime contributors are welcomed as long as you have a good take.

Pick your sport, pick your subject.

I would love to feature more high school sports especially girls.

If you are a good writer and want your own myHitNews sub domain to cover your sport or blog I can set it up free of charge with no monthly fees ever. If you want to spin-off into your own domain I can set you up with that, too. Of course, I’ll have to charge for that service.

You got pictures or a video you want the world to see? Send it. All contributions are welcomed.

Thanks for those that sent the kind words and encouragement.

Now please help keep MHN fresh.

Yep, that’s right. I said it! In my opinion Larry Station is the best Nebraska high school athlete that there has ever been.

Station graduated from Omaha Central in 1982, but before he left he became a two-time all-state football player, a two-time state champion in the shot put and he also won a state title in the discus — setting state records in each event. Nearly 30 years later, Station still holds Class A state records in the shot put (64-9.5) and discus (202-1.)

If all that’s not enough for you, get this: Station was one of the state’s top tennis players — a Nebraska juniors tennis state champion to boot. Good grief!

Station went on to become a consensus First Team All-American linebacker at the University of Iowa, where he continues to hold the school record for total tackles in a career (492). During his last college football stance, played at the 1986 Rose Bowl Game against UCLA, he suffered a serious back injury from which he never fully recovered. The injury caused him to cut short his NFL career after only one season.

No one who ever saw Larry Station play football could ever forget his greatness. Therefore, in 2009 he was rewarded with one of the highest honors an athlete could ever receive: Induction into the College Football Hall of Fame.

I never saw Station play in person but I do vividly recall watching some of his games on television. He played LB — that’s was my position, too — so I couldn’t help but to focus on his play. And let me tell you, “Larry Station was one bad man! A beast, one of the best I’ve ever seen.”

LaQue Moen-Davis Leaps out of this World at the
USATF National Junior Olympic Track and Field Championships

Omaha North grad LaQue Moen-Davis had a spectacular showing at the recently concluded USATF National Junior Olympic Track and Field Championships held in Wichita, Kansas this past week.

Running for the Midwest Striders track team, Moen-Davis started things off earlier in the week by capturing the Heptathlon, winning three of the seven events outright and placing 2nd in two others to score a total of 4692 points. She then moved on to win her top two specialties in the young women long jump (19-6) and triple jump (40-10.25).

Moen-Davis looked for a moment like she had a real chance of grabbing a fourth gold medal when she ran a PR and a Nebraska Association record time of 13.82 in Saturday’s semi-final heat of the young women 100m hurdles. But the Texas A&M-bound track and field star had to settle for the bronze with a pedestrian time of 14.10 in Sundays finals.

It’s hard to believe that four years have gone by so fast. Yet I feel blessed to have witnessed this young lady perform at such a towering level throughout her high school career. LaQue Moen-Davis is an incredible female track and field athlete — the likes of which Nebraska may not see again for some time.

Thank you, LaQue.

Cotton Clan on the Rise

I told y’all at the beginning of the track season to “get use to hearing the name ‘Kenzo Cotton‘.” Well, now, there is another Cotton — Kurtis Cotton, Keno’s youngest brother, who took home two national gold medals by winning the midget boys 100m (11.71) and crushing the Nebraska Association 200m record by .50 seconds to take the 200m in 23.66.

Kenzo ran a PR of 10.87 to win the bronze in the intermediate boys 100m. Both Kenzo and Kurtis run for the Bellevue Breeze Track & Field club (also know as the Bellevue Recreation Youth Club).

My goodness! Daddy Curtis Cotton, a former NU and professional football player, must be smiling ear-to-ear these days.

In the young men discus event Brady Rutt took 3rd (182-2) and Michelle Wallerstedt was 6the in the young women’s discus with a toss of 134-11.

Garrett Teel, Dennis and Devin Barfield and Cody Rush took 4th place in the young men 4X400 relay of (3:15.46), running for the Bellevue Recreation Youth Club. Their time was over 1.5 seconds faster than the 3.17.15 all-time best Nebraska high school 1600relay time set by Fremont in 1985. That’s movin’!

Urban Finally Gets D-1A Offer

Quentin Urban — the 5-11, 185lbs standout multi-sport-athlete from Millard South hangs up his helmet and football cleats for a bat and glove.

This past December Urban accepted a football scholarship from D-1AA South Dakota. But late last month Darin Erstad, Nebraska’s new head baseball coach, offered the stud a scholarship and a chance to make a name for himself on the baseball diamond. I guess it was slam dunk decision when a man with the professional hardware that Erstad has accumulated over his career ( three-time Gold Glove Award winner and two-time All-Star) wants to make you his first recruit.

Good move by Erstad too, considering Urban is one of the best all-around Nebraska high school athletes to come down the pike: a two-time First Team All-Nebraska football and baseball player and honorable mention All-Metro in basketball. He will bring a lot of athleticism and a gutsy hardnosed winner’s attitude to the ball club.

Even so I’m still saddened by the fact that I won’t get to see “Q” do his thing on the football field.

Urban finished his senior year for the Patriots with a .464 batting average, 37 RBIs and 43 runs. He is tentatively slotted to play left or centerfield for NU.

Biggs Edges Closer to the Big Time

Deverell Biggs — the class of 2010 Omaha Central grad was among the nation’s top 100 JUCO basketball players to be invited to the prestigious Mullen Top 100 JUCO Showcase Camp held last weekend in St. Louis. Last year 71 out of 100 campers eventually received D-1 scholarships, according to the camp’s website.

Biggs also made a move from Western Texas Community College to Seward County Kansas Community College, located in Liberal, KS.

Last season Biggs averaged 14 points per game as a freshman for Western Texas.

Michelle Wallerstedt, Omaha Burke — the senior-to-be threw 136-1 to take 2nd in the young women discus at the USA Youth Outdoor Track & Field Championships. She also is an automatic qualifier for the for USA Track and Field National Junior Olympic Championships (USATF JO Championships) that will be held in Wichita, Kansas on July 27 thru August 1st at Wichita State University.

Nichols also qualified for USATF JO Championships by winning the JO Region 8 400m (56.23) and 800m (2:16.94).

Kenzo Cotton, Papillion-La Vista — the first freshman boy to win the state meet 200 meter gold medal qualified for the USATF JO Championships by winning the Region 8 intermediate boys 200m (22.78) and 100m (11.12).

Devin and Dennis Barfield (Omaha Central); Garrett Teel (Lincoln Pius X ) and Cody Rush (Grand Island Northwest) teamed up to win the JO Region 8 young men’s 400m relay with a very impressive time of 3:16.65. Dennis Barfield also qualified for the JO Nationals by finishing 4th in the 400m (49.54).

Nebraska high school state track meet best of 200 meter finals and top boys and girls 400 relays featuring: Clara Nichols, Blake Micek, Michael Wickham, Kenzo Cotton, Omaha North girls and Central boys 400 relays.

At left is Nebraska state girls 400 meter record holder Clara Nichols. The Millard South junior won three gold Medals and finished 2nd in the Class A 100m at the 2011 Nebraska State Track and Field Meet.

Her 55.05 400 meter finals performance established a new state record and her gold medal winning time of 24.80 in the 200 meter finals was a PR for Nichols as well as her 100 meter runner-up finish (12.15). She capped off her outstanding meet by anchoring the Patriots 1600 relay team to a season’s best 3:58.28 gold medal performance.

As a tribute to Clara’s extraordinary dedication and commitment to being the very best she can be, I threw in a little something extra in this video to pay homage to her. After all she has done something no other Nebraska high school girl has done and she did it in what in my opinion is the most intensely gruelling and athletically demanding event in track—the 400 meter. Moreover, Clara Nichols has one of the strongest wills and a desire for being the best that I’ve ever seen in a young athlete, girl or boy.

Kenzo Cotton, Fr, Papillion-La Vista: on May 21, 2011, he became the first freshman boy in 97 years to win a Nebraska State Track and Field Meet 200 meter or 220yd dash—the only one to ever win the 200m. His state meet championship 200m winning time (21.77) was the 5th fastest since 1980. Cotton also placed third in the Class A 100m with a time of 10.97, though he ran a faster time (10.92) to win his prelim heat the day before.

Outlook

In the four years that I have covered Nebraska HS track through MHN, I’ve only seen two freshmen that I knew were destined for greatness: LaQue Moen-Davis and Clara Nichols. By “greatness” I mean athletes capable of posting times and/or marks that no Nebraskans before them have achieved.

The identifying physical and intrinsic qualities that both Moen-Davis and Nichols possessed as freshmen are all clearly evident in Kenzo Cotton. However, unlike the two girls, I cannot say with confidence that Cotton will realize the same destiny on the track.

Physically, Kenzo is a fourteen-year-old man-child who, most likely, has not gone through his major growth spurt. How much bigger will he get? In addition, according to several news stories, he is planning to play football this season: Will he start lifting weights to get bigger and, then, fall in love with the results to the point where his increased muscularity and bulk become a determent to his track speed? I’ve seen it happen far too many times.

The aforementioned reasons are why I hesitate to proclaim future track greatness for this young man. His potential for greatness may be best realized on the football field. It’s just too early to tell.

If Kenzo makes it through next winter and the rest of his high school career without a dramatic increase in bulk or height and he remains focused on the track, he has the talent to set records in the 200m and 400m. And if he gets his start down in the 100m he could become one of the best ever in that event too.

Cody Rush, Jr, Grand Island Northwest: he ran a near all-time chart season’s best 48.38 in the Class B 400m finals to take home the all-class gold medal in the most completively loaded event at the 2011 state meet. He took third in the Class B 200 (22.37).

Outlook

Even though he reportedly registered a hand held 21.5 200m time during the season, his state meet times did not reflect such prowess. Rush’s success lies more with his fluid form and strong will rather than his speed. But he will need more of both if he desires to hold onto his crown, because the 2012 field of 400m competitors will be stronger and more seasoned.

Sean Pille, Jr, Oakland-Craig: he delivered the biggest upsets of the 2011 state meet when he set a new Class C record in the 110m HH (14.39) and edged out state leader Nehemiah Wilkins for the all-class gold. In doing so, Pille demonstrated outstanding form over the barriers: little if any air between his bottom and the hurdle, good body lean over the lead leg, quick hind leg snap down and quick steps in between. Pille also won the Class C 300m IMH (39.68).

Outlook

It will be very difficult for anyone to beat Pille in the hurdle races next season. If he sets his mind to the task he has the skill to at least climb into the all-time charts in the 300 and maybe the 110 if his speed is there.

Mo Hamdan, So, Lincoln North Star: the underclassman had the task of having to register a phenomenal drop in his 1600m PR if he wanted to beat season leader Jacob Olsen (Kearney) and take home the all-class gold. A perfect recipe for excitement if you were part of the overflow crowd at Burke Stadium that was treated to an outstanding Class A 1600m race where they witnessed Hamdan dig down deep for that PR (4:18.90) to pull out the win over Olsen in a close finish. Hamdan ran another PR 1:54.66 PR to finish 3rd in the 800m.

Outlook

Mo Hamdan has two more seasons in high school to establish himself among the greatest Nebraska boys middle distance runners of all-time. Or maybe he could just become the best ever.

Mach Dojiok, Jr, Omaha Benson—he was the star of the best race at the 2011 state meet, winning a thrilling three-way two-lap battle to the finish for the 800m all-class gold medal. The 800m season leader outlasted Mo Hamdan and out-gutted Jacob Olsen for the title with a 1:53.81 PR—only .41 away from making the all-time chart.

Outlook

The only things that can prevent Mach from making the 800m all-time chart as a senior are injury, loss of focus or some unforeseen calamity. However, a chart performance next season won’t guarantee a ACG with Olsen and Hamdan still hanging around.

Thomas Feichtinger, Jr, Mount Michael Benedictine: only Sean Pille’s winning the ACG 110 HH over Wilkins was a bigger state meet surprise to me. Feichtinger ran the second best time of the season (9:32.50) to win his Class B heat to beat out Class A season leader Danny Aldaba (Fremont) for the big prize. Feichtinger also took 3rd in the Class B 1600m (4:28.26).

Outlook

He will be in the mix for the title again next year, but he better bring his A game. Something tells me that Aldaba is going to light it up next year.

Dennis Barfield, Jr, Omaha Central: he did not win an individual ACG, but he did win two ACGs as a member of the No. 5 all-time chart Central 400m relay team (41.97) and their 1600m relay (3:20.03). Barfield also won the Class A 400 meter title with a very impressive PR 48.47.

Outlook

This young man immediately caught my eye during his 400m win at the Metro. He is a true warrior who continues to post PR after PR: if a college coach is looking for a 400 man to build upon—here he is!

Sorry Rush, but this Dennis Barfield beats you in a heads-up race. He is the most impressive boy 400m sprinter I saw on the track at Burke Stadium!

If Barfield keeps his hunger and trains smart—he can make a very deep run into the all-time chart next season.

Devin Barfield, So, Omaha Central: He won ACG medals as a member of the Eagles’400 and 1600 relay teams. In a close loss to Kenzo Cotton, he posted the meet’s second best 200m time (21.84). He was the only other boy besides Cotton to even come reasonably close to going under 22 seconds—let alone to do it. Devin also sprinted to a 5th place finish in the Class A 100m (11.03).

Outlook

It must run in the family because this young man has every bit the talent and warrior spirit his older brother possesses. He stands in rare company as being one among a handful of Nebraska high school sophomores that have ever run a legitimate electronically-timed sub-22 200m. It should also be duly noted that at the state meet Devin closed the gap of victory by Cotton compared to the outcome at the Metro. As long as he keeps his focus and health Devin is going to have his day in the sun.

Devin and Kenzo could take the 200m to a whole new level in Nebraska.

Marshall Anderson, JR, Papillion-La Vista: he won the 3200m ACG in 2010 with a time nearly 5 seconds better than than the 2011 champ. Yet Anderson couldn’t manage to come anywhere near that time this entire season; he could do no better than a Class A 7th place finish at state (9:46.04). What happened?

Danny Aldaba, So, Fremont: posted the season’s best 3200m (9:29.30) but he couldn’t quite come close enough to his best at state to beat Class B’s Feichtinger’s time; he settled for the Class A crown with a time of 9:34.15.

Aldaba has the ability to become one of the best.

Blake Micek, Jr, Hastings St, Cecilia: won Class C 100 (10.86) and 200m (22.22). Among the early favorites to win 2012 100m ACG.

Michael Wickham, Jr, Bennington won Class B 200m (22.27) 3rd 100m (11.12).

Anton Rice, Jr, Omaha Gross Catholic: won Clas B 800m (1:56.05) third 400m (50.29).

Justin English, Jr, Grand Island, placed 2nd in Class A long jump 23-6.25.

Levi Gipson, Jr, Lincoln Christian: won Class C 400m (48.68).

Jacob Olsen, Jr, Kearney: 2nd Class A 1600 (4:19.74) and 3200m (1:53.96).

He could become a sixty-footer.
