There are about 18 plays from last night’s Burke vs.Central football that I edited and uploaded to YouTube--included are Ted Lampkin’s 76 yard kick return and Jimmie Forsythe’s 67 yard scamper.  If everything goes well with the upload, the video should be available later this morning.

Notes: There were several class of 2012 prospects that showed promise:  Burke’s  DJ Avant RB/LB (5-10, 200) and Hunter Greer OL (6-7, 300). Central’s  Alex Williams, TE/DE (6-3,225); Will Burgess QB (6-185) and Darian Barrientos-Jackson FS (6-2, 190).

Lampkin: Receiving 6-133; Rushing 2-3; TD 1--kick return 87 yards.
Forsythe: Passing 9 out of 10 for 83 yards; Rushing 29 for 216 yards; TD 3--67, 6, and 6.

The following is a live post  delivered via my mobile phone while at the Burke vs. Central football  game held at Burke Stadium,  on August 27, 2010.

This was a new experience for me. I lost connection once right after Jimmie Forsythe’s second score. So I was unable to immediately update the score.

MHN is also on Twitter now. It’s much faster posting a live message on Twitter  than it is with this WordPress post. However, you have the disadvantage of a total word limit with Twitter. Plus you don’t get a permanent presence of your postings like you can with WordPress.

Burke vs. Central Football 2010–Live Mobile Post, August 27, 2010:

Forsythe just scored 67 yards on option. Burke 7-0. Lampkin returns kickoff 76 yards. 7-7.

10-7 Central, after Burke fumble on long drive. Central then drives 50 yards to settle for FG. Central QB Burgess looks good. Lampkin having big game too. End of 1st QT. Central. D tough on the run against Burke.

Not much going on right now both teams struggle to run ball.
Half time. Score still 10-7 Central. Game is getting a little rough around the edges: too many penalties. A Central player got ejected towards the end of the second qtr. It almost cost them as Burke managed to continue the drive e and almost get into position to score before time expired.

Other than the penalties it’s a pretty good game that looks like it will be decided by a big play.

Lampkin impressive catching several passes and the big 76 yd kick return. Jimmie Forsythe is showing well too. I’m sure he has close to 100 yds at the half.

Still can’t tell if the Eagles are for real this year or Burke is coming out the gate weak.

I really like the Eagle’s D so far.

Let’s see if Burke coaches Limongi and Jackson can find an answer. Second half about to start.

Eagles drive all the way to Burke 30. Lampkin makes spectacular 35 yd catch, but Burke stops drive.

21-10 Burke.

Lost connection. 2 scores by Forsythe–a beast putting team on back.

21-16 Burke. 3:14 left. Central scored on short drive with pass to 34.

2:16 Burke with ball. Timeout. Game over. Burke– 21-16.

A very hard hitting game featuring two of the state’s finest football players. Jimmie Forsythe and Teddy Lampkin. Great game by both. Forsythe had three scores and somewhere close to 200 on the ground.

It’s time–Nebraska high school football time. I can’t wait to see how this season pans out and what new studs will emerge onto the scene. It always happens every year no matter how much we try to evaluate talent there is always someone lurking around out there that we missed or that we thought was few bushels shy of having enough of the goods to play D-1 football. So who will that person be this be this year?

One of my favorite candidates leading the MHN Class of 2011 Prospects to Watch List is Omaha Burke QB Jimmie Forsythe. In fact Forsythe is the reason why I posted the MHN poll: “ Who is the best Quarterback to ever play for the Nebraska Cornhuskers?”  That’s because the other day I was watching one of Jimmie’s films and it hit me–he reminds me of former Millard North great, and Heisman Trophy winner, Eric Crouch.   Fast, quick feet and tough! The boy is good. Very good!  OK.  That’s as far as I am going to go with the comparison between Crouch and Forsythe except to say that if Jimmie Forsythe stays healthy and keeps his focus–he is going to be a force at the next level.

My closing thought today is “How much longer will it be before Omaha Northwest head football coach Damon Benning wins his first game. Better yet, will he ever win a game. Huh?

I’ve been away for awhile due to some commitments, but I will be back in earnest after the July 4th break.

As anticipated  the 2011 Gang  is shaping up to be a very worthy class indeed.

Nate Skold, a 6-foot-8-inch 280 pound behemoth OT out of Omaha Westside, recently became the seventh Nebraskan in the class of 2011 to pick up a D-1 offer (Tulane). Still plenty of time left in the recruiting calendar to add a few more names to the list.

Class of 2011 Full of Talent At the Top

Zach Sterup: The big fella is racking up the offers.

   The State of Nebraska, with a meager population base of only 1.8 million and geographically situated in the far from glamorous Midwest farm belt–where the winters can be brutally unforgiving and the summers torridly hot–continues to produce some of the nation’s best high school athletes.  To illustrate the point, just look at the top dogs in the Nebraska high school football class of 2011:

Zach Sterup–The Hasting St Cecilia Catholic giant has already picked up double-digit numbers of D-1 offers and 4 Stars from Rivals. “The Big Freak” is also a very talented basketball player who could be on his way to becoming one of the most sought after athletes in the history of Nebraska high school sports.

Ryne Reeves—The Nebraska commit also recently picked up 4 stars from Rivals and is rated as high as the #2 center prospect in the country. Who knows how many offers the Crete High senior-to-be may have picked up if had not immediately pounced on the Nebraska offer.

Ted Lampkin—The dynamo from Central holds offers from Kansas and Kansas State. If you are talking about athleticism and explosiveness (24 and 48 feet plus long and triple jumper) and speed (4.37 forty), Lampkin is your man– a potential college game-breaker deluxe.

Daniel Davie—The “Beatrice Bullet” rocketed his way to state meet All-Class gold medals in the 100 and 200 meter sprints. A healthy-sized  six-footer, Davie has a huge upside to go along with his 38” vertical and 4.40 forty. He currently holds an offer from Ohio but is sure to have more come his way.

Davie received D-1 offers from Kansas and Nebraska, shortly after this article was posted.

Cole Fisher—The Millard North LB claimed two early offers from Iowa and Kansas. Tall and long with plenty of frame to fill, It’s obvious that there are some good genes in the Fisher family. Cole’s brother is already a stalwart for the Huskers. Daddy Fisher could also play some ball in his day.

Derrius Vick—The multi-talented and shifty dual-threat QB from Lincoln Southeast picked up a football offer from Colorado State to go along with his basketball offer from the Rams. Strong camps and/or a good senior season should produce some more takers.  A lot of talent and presence in Vick.

   The talent in Nebraska is often ignored by D-1 recruiters seeking the far more fertile grounds of Texas, Florida, California and the likes. But make no mistake about it–Nebraska high schools produce a lot of good football players.  A major reason why the Huskers have won five national titles and 2009 Division II National Champions Northwest Missouri State has been so successful is because both programs field a lot of Nebraska high school football players.  We should also add Iowa University to the list of successful football programs that have benefited from Nebraska talent, over the years.

A lot of good coaching–from the midgets through high school–and that secret recipe in the water continue to produce some of the best high school football players in the nation.

NOTES:  If it becomes reality, the looming announcement that Nebraska University may leave the Big 12 for the Big Ten– as predicted by media-heads–the change will bring a whole new dimension to high school recruiting in Nebraska. Better yet It could also introduce a new monster rivalry: Nebraska Huskers vs. Iowa Hawkeyes.  And can you just imagine a Nebraska Huskers vs. Ohio State Buckeye game. Oh my!

Change is good.

First Blows Of Season Delivered At Jamboree: Class of 2010 Slated to Get in Last Blasts at Shrine Bowl Game

Antaries Daniels will be among the top seniors featured at the 2010 Shrine Bowl Football Game.

   The High school football season is almost close enough to smell. In fact–this week–many of Nebraska’s gridiron gladiators have already begun to knock heads this spring, while camping at the MG High School Football Jamboree.

   Even better yet, on Saturday, June 19 (6:30 p.m. start time), some of the top seniors from the Class of 2010 will have the opportunity to deliver the last big hits of their high school careers, during the 52nd Annual Nebraska Shrine Bowl Football Game to be held at Lincoln’s Memorial Stadium.
 
   Last year’s Shrine game was pretty entertaining. And based on the talent listed on the 2010 Shrine roster–this North vs. South showdown has the potential to be at least as exciting.

   Don’t blink too long: the 2010 high school football season is fast approaching, With the wrap up of college spring ball, college coaches will be begin focusing on rounding out their class of 2011 recruits. 

   The month of May marks the beginning of a month long period that the NCAA has set aside to allow college coaches to visit high school campuses to evaluate the talent pool.  The NCAA prohibits the coaches from actually communicating with the athletes (except they can acknowledge them by saying hello) but they can speak to their coaches, watch them participate in practices and review their transcripts.
 

   The 2011 Nebraska high school class is shaping up to be one of the better classes in recent memory. Already there are four Nebraska high school football prospects that hold at least one D-1A offer. Zach Sterup, a 6-foot-9, 265lb athlete out of Hasting St Cecilia Catholic leads the pack with five D-1 offers. Sterup is also a very talented basketball player and is receiving a lot of attention from college coaches in that sport as well. The other Nebraska prospects holding D-1A offers are Ryne Reeves, OL, 6-3, 285, Crete; Cole Fisher, LB, 6-3, 212, Millard North and Ted Lampkin, ATH, 5-7, 160, Omaha Central (see the MHN Class of 2011 Nebraska High School Football Prospect Board below to view offers). 

   There are number of athletes that look to be next in line to get a D-1 offer or two:  Below, check out the reported measurables on Beatrice’s Daniel Davie—nasty! Davie currently holds an offer from D-1AA North Dakota State. His 4.40 40 time and 38″ vertical will be hard for recruiters to ignore. Omaha Burke LB Nate Kroupa is another prospect boasting impressive numbers and he looks good on film too. Millard South’s All-Nebraska LB/RB Quentin Urban may not have lip-licking measurables but there is no doubt that he is a very talented athlete—which includes basketball and baseball—and the playmaker delivers the goods on the football field. Ryan Randall put up some freaky rushing numbers last year for Blair–2,000 plus; Lincoln Southeast’s Derrius Vick holds a D-1 offer in basketball and the explosive and shifty ATH will be in the hunt to add one in football.  

   The above are just a few of the possibilities to watch out for in the next few months. Of course–like always– someone will pop out of seemingly nowhere to snatch a D-1 offer.  And that is why the next few months of the recruiting cycle will be so important for prospects to make an impression.  

Get ready for your camps this spring and summer and be prepared to deliver your best in the fall!
