Nebraska HS Football Recruiting Class of 2012 Recap: Looks Can Be Deceiving

State of affairs are better than they appear for Nebraska prep football

In a recent Omaha World-Herald article titled “Blair’s Schany officially signs with Bobcats,” longtime World-Herald Staff Writer Stu Pospisil brought forth some very depressing recruiting figures regarding the Nebraska high football class of 2012.

“Schany is one of four known Football Bowl Subdivision scholarship recruits from Nebraska, the smallest class from the state in many years. The Metro Conference was shut out for the first time in recent memory, maybe for the first time since the national letter of intent program started in 1964.”

Stu is correct in his assessment but if one takes a deeper look into the class of 2012 recruiting numbers you will find this class to be one of the strongest in recent years.

Looking back at last year’s class of 2011, there were 9 D-1A signees and 6 D-1AA signees, giving the class a total of 15 division 1 signees.

As Pospisil mentioned in his article, only 4 class of 2012 Nebraska high school prospects signed D-1A letters of intent. Yet a whopping 13 Nebraska kids in this year’s class signed with D-1AA schools – a total of 17 division 1 football signees for the class of 2012.

The Class of 2010 had 6 D-1A (includes 1 gray shirt) and 9 D-1AA signees – 15 division 1 signees.

The class of 2012 has 2 more division 1 signees compared to the previous two classes.

The class of 2012 also had more prospects turndown reported D-1A offers and/or D-1-AA offers compared to any other recruiting class I’ve covered during my soon-to-be five years at MHN. Of course many of the prospects spurning those division 1 offers chose to walk-on at Nebraska.

Keep an eye on the prospects from the Nebraska high school class of 2012 – this class has the potential to produce more quality division 1 and division 2 players than any class in the past several years.

Omaha North’s Brandin Bryant Picks up Full Ride to Florida Atlantic

Omaha North's Brandin Bryant earns way to the big show at Florida Atlantic.

Class of 2011 prospect Brandin Bryant, a 6-foot-2, 255 lbs. DE/LB who played at Omaha North High School, will sign a letter of intent to play for Carl Pelini at Florida Atlantic University.

Bryant played at Fort Scott Community College last season and said that he was recruited by FAU recruiting coordinator and wide receivers coach Jeff Sims to play DE and OLB.

Bryant was not a high-profile recruit coming out of high school. In fact he was not selected to any of the all-state first or second teams. But to the discerning eye there was absolutely no doubt that if you watched him play – he was a bona fide division 1 talent.

Bryant’s lack of recruitment and recognition came entirely from the fact that he didn’t’ always take things seriously – putting it politely. I mean to say that he likes to clown and joke around a lot is a huge understatement. And I can say that because I’ve known Brandin since he was about seven years old.

Consequently, Brandin constantly chided me about not putting him on the MHN Top 25 Prospect ranking and told me that he would get the last laugh and prove me and everyone else wrong! And so he has. But remember Brandin I did say that “the cream always raises to the top” and “someone is going to “lick this cream [you] up.”

We all just needed to see you take things just a little more seriously.

Now the Florida Atlantic University fans are about to get a taste of that “scrumdiddilyumptious” Nebraska bred cream.

Nebraska Class of 2012 Football Recruiting Looking Up!

Three more Nebraskans receive “official“ D-1 offers. I quote the word “official” because months ago Papillion-La Vista’s Dylan Utter emailed MHN to inform that Army had made him an offer this past summer. However, as time went on, I became suspicious since no other recruiting source had reported this supposed offer (click here to read the MHN article). Good to see that it was legitimate.

In addition to Utter, big TE prospect Matt Miller, Omaha Skutt Catholic, also picked up an offer from Army and Omaha North WR Terry Grigsby got a nod from Ohio’s Frank Solich.

The recent offers bring the total number of – known – D-1A offered players in the class of 2012 to eight. Not bad. But there’s still more time for more!

Bo Liekhus Leads Pack of Overlooked Prospects

Listed at a healthy 6-foot, 195 lbs. and reportedly capable of blazing the 40 yard dash in 4.41 seconds, Bellevue West senior Bo Liekhus still somehow managed to fly just enough under the radar to garner little if any pre-season hype. Nevertheless, during the 2011 season the dynamic sure-tackling DB recorded the second most tackles in Class A (86 solo and 19 assisted) and scored two defensive touchdowns.

His total body of work was impressive enough for him to be selected a first team defensive back on both the 2011 Omaha World-Herald All-Nebraska and Lincoln Journal Star Super-State teams. His first team selections are even more impressive when you consider that Bellevue West finished the season with a 3-7 record – history proves how difficult it is for an athlete to get even a second team slot when he is from a school with a losing record.

Earlier this month, Liekhus, who is still being courted by several D-1A schools, committed to D-1AA North Dakota State. It will be interesting to see if any of the D-1A schools will step up to the plate by February.
I’ll just say, “Bo Liekhus’ speed, size and ability are going to be hard to pass by. So all you North Dakota State fans don’t get too comfortable with landing this stud.”

Listed below are some of the outstanding Class of 2012 first and second team All-Nebraska and Super-State prospects that did not make the MHN End-of Season Top 25 ranking.

You can bet that a few of the guys listed will make it on to our Final Class of 2012 Top 25 list, to be release shortly after signing day.

The question now becomes how many – if any – of the guys in on our Top 25 and from the list of awarded players presented below will receive D-1A and/or D-1AA offers by February?

MHN Needs Your Help

In response to my ‘Goodbye World’ post on November 27, 2011

During the past four years, I’ve immensely enjoyed covering Nebraska’s top high school athletes through the myHitNews.com blog. However, due to current obligations as well as the development of future projects – at the present time – my free time is very limited. Therefore, I made a decision late last month to shutdown the site.

In hindsight, considering the wealth of information, articles, videos and images collected on MHN and the abundance of Google and other search engine hits for this information, I would be doing a disservice to many of the athletes, coaches, administrators and past contributors that have been featured in some shape or fashion on this site.

As a result I have decided not to shutdown MHN.

Yet to keep things fresh I need your help.

I need contributing authors who are willing to write occasional, weekly, and/or daily articles. Even onetime contributors are welcomed as long as you have a good take.

Pick your sport, pick your subject.

I would love to feature more high school sports especially girls.

If you are a good writer and want your own myHitNews sub domain to cover your sport or blog I can set it up free of charge with no monthly fees ever. If you want to spin-off into your own domain I can set you up with that, too. Of course, I’ll have to charge for that service.

This is the 37th year for the 1000 Yard ClubThe following are some noteworthy tidbits for this 2011 edition:

85 backs surpassed the 1000 yard plateau in 2011. 62 were seniors,
17 are juniors, and 6 are sophomores.
A record seven schools had two 1000 yard rushers: Omaha Burke, Pawnee City, Kenesaw, Creighton, Clarkson, Bloomfield, and Hitchcock County.
There were 42 eleven man backs to hit the mark, 37 were from the 8-Man ranks, and there were six from the 6-Man football league.
Garrett Kolling from Alma was a 3 time thousand yard rusher.
Austin Casperson of Centura was the first back in his school’s history to rush for over a thousand yards.

These backs have a chance to 3-peat as 1000 yard rushers in 2012: Isaac Aakre-Millard North, Jackie Bailey-McCool Junction, Luke Glenn-Shelton, and James Kruger-Norris.

Jacob Morrill of Creighton has a rare opportunity to become a four-year 1000 yard runner. He has rushed for over a 1000 yards in his first two seasons of varsity football, and will be a junior in 2012. Only two backs have ever turned that trick in history and they are Mike Brower of Fillmore Central (2000-2003) and Brandon Holtorf of Prague, who was also a 4-year 1000 yard passer from 1998 to 2001.

Omaha Area Football Prospects Left Out in Cold

: Where They Are Coming From: Nebraska high school Class of 2012 D-1A football Offers.

Are you kidding me! There are 16 Class A football teams located inside the Omaha Metro Area (17 if you count Fremont), yet not a single class of 2012 prospect from one these schools is known to hold a D-1A football scholarship.

Presently, only five prospects from the Nebraska high school class of 2012 are known to hold D-1A football offers (see map). Moreover, this is the first year in the past four that at least one new prospect has not been offered between the start and end of Nebraska’s high school football regular season.

has the quality of Nebraska high school football become this horrible? Isn’t Class A football in Nebraska supposed to represent the highest level of football in the state? Isn’t the Omaha Metro Area home to several of the top football programs in the state? Haven’t these Omaha Metro Area programs produced 9 out of the last 11 Class A football state champions?

Don’t tell me about lack of population! According to 2010 U.S. Census figures the City of Omaha’s population is 408,958, making it the 42^nd largest city in the United States.

The 865,350 citizens that reside within Omaha’s metropolitan area ranks as the 60^th most populace metro in America.

Let’s also not forget that this “small” Omaha Metro Area has produced 3 Heisman Trophy winners a couple of Outland and Lombardi award winners and numerous All-Americans.

In my opinion, the insidious reason as to why Omaha area football prospects in particular and Nebraska high school prospects in general are overlooked is that the more the only D-1A football program in Nebraska continues to discount Nebraska high school prospects as simply walk-on material – so too will the other D-1 A programs in the region.

In fact the only Nebraska high school prospect in the class of 2012 offered by Nebraska is Sam Cotton. Ring a bell?

Of course, if you happen to be the son of a coach or somehow related to the Husker football program you need not worry – there is a scholarship waiting for you.

Note: NU offensive line coach Barney Cotton is the Huskers point man for recruiting the entire State of Nebraska.

Class A Football Finals: Omaha Burke VS. Lincoln Southeast

Two Fairly Even Teams Square off to Claim Title

In just his first year as head football coach, Ryan Gotulla already has his Lincoln Southeast Knights preparing to bring back another championship to add to the school’s vast collection.

The storied football program has won eight state titles and three runner-up trophies, but it has been nearly a decade since a Lincoln Southeast team has made an appearance in the Class A state finals.

In stark contrast to Southeast’s overflowing display cabinet, an Omaha Burke football team has never won a state title nor has it ever played in a final contest at Memorial Stadium in Lincoln. However, in 1980, they did play in a Class A state final game held at Burke Stadium, where they suffered a 7-24 loss to Creighton Prep.

So how does the aforementioned trivia and history factor into trying to predict which team will win this contest. Well, it depends on where you stand.

Intangibles

Omaha Burke has absolutely no championship heritage in football, while Lincoln Southeast is bursting at the seams in glory. That has to spook a person you a little. Although the counter to Burke’s predicament is:”How many times has a first year head coach led his team to a Class A state championship?”

During the 2011 season, Paul Limongi’s Bulldogs played one of the most difficult schedules in Class A and still came away unscathed at 12-0. Lincoln Southeast’s schedule was noticeably softer and they dropped a game to Papillion–La Vista South to sand at 11-1.

Comparing the Personnel

QB: Both squads start juniors at the position. Burke’s Zach Cook (6-2, 195) has thrown for over 1,700 yards this season. Southeast’s Najee Jackson (6-1, 160) is more of a smooth, athletic, game manager type that can throw the ball on target when the need arises. Cook may have the better overall stats but there is no edge here in effectiveness and/or leadership.

RB: Burke has two very good 1,000 yard senior backs: small, shifty Jordan Nelson and the big, bruising Carson Collins. Southeast junior RB Devin Washington (5-7, 160) is as good and durable as they come in high school. The edge goes to Burke here because they have two studs.

Receivers: Burke’s best receiver, Zach Oliver, was kicked off the team before last week’s semifinal. Good thing Collins and Nelson can catch out of the backfield. The leading receiver for Southeast is Desmond Robinson – he shows good speed and he, Jackson and Washington have played together since little league. Underneath, Jackson has the luxury of also looking to TE Sam Cotton. Amazingly, Cotton is the only known D-1A prospect that will lineup in this championship game. Slight edge to Burke here because they just throw more.

Line Play: The reason why Burke and Southeast have made it this far is because they both get solid play from their big guys up front. Burke has more size with the likes of James Andersen and Hunter Greer, but that size is not enough to give them an edge over the very well-coached and tough group of Knights. Even.

Defense

The Knights have an overall better and more athletic defense compared to Burke’s. Even so, the Knights have not faced any team this year that has anywhere near the talent that Burke fields on offense.

Conclusion: These are two very good teams.

Prediction: Too close to call. It’s a tossup
