In response to my ‘Goodbye World’ post on November 27, 2011

During the past four years, I’ve immensely enjoyed covering Nebraska’s top high school athletes through the myHitNews.com blog. However, due to current obligations as well as the development of future projects – at the present time – my free time is very limited. Therefore, I made a decision late last month to shutdown the site.

In hindsight, considering the wealth of information, articles, videos and images collected on MHN and the abundance of Google and other search engine hits for this information, I would be doing a disservice to many of the athletes, coaches, administrators and past contributors that have been featured in some shape or fashion on this site.

As a result I have decided not to shutdown MHN.

Yet to keep things fresh I need your help.

I need contributing authors who are willing to write occasional, weekly, and/or daily articles. Even onetime contributors are welcomed as long as you have a good take.

Pick your sport, pick your subject.  

I would love to feature more high school sports especially girls.

If you are a good writer and want your own myHitNews sub domain to cover your sport or blog I can set it up free of charge with no monthly fees ever.  If you want to spin-off into your own domain I can set you up with that, too. Of course, I’ll have to charge for that service.

You got pictures or a video you want the world to see? Send it. All contributions are welcomed.

Gesell cited his belief in Hawkeyes head basketball coach Fran McCaffery and his desire to play point guard at the college level as the main reasons why he chose Iowa over several other D-1A programs that offered.

Nebraska, Creighton, Iowa State, Drake, Utah, Stanford and Northern Iowa are the other D1-A programs that have reportedly made offers to the South Sioux City High School senior-to-be.

Baring injury or any other calamity, I expect to see this kid to make his presence well-known around the Big Ten.

Urban Finally Gets D-1A Offer

Quentin Urban — the 5-11, 185lbs standout multi-sport-athlete from Millard South hangs up his helmet and football cleats for a bat and glove.

This past December Urban accepted a football scholarship from D-1AA South Dakota. But late last month Darin Erstad, Nebraska’s new head baseball coach, offered the stud a scholarship and a chance to make a name for himself on the baseball diamond.  I guess it was slam dunk decision when a man with the professional hardware that Erstad has accumulated over his career ( three-time Gold Glove Award winner and two-time All-Star) wants to make you his first recruit.

Good move by Erstad too, considering Urban is one of the best all-around Nebraska high school athletes to come down the pike: a two-time First Team All-Nebraska football and baseball player and honorable mention All-Metro in basketball.  He will bring a lot of athleticism and a gutsy hardnosed winner’s attitude to the ball club.

Even so I’m still saddened by the fact that I won’t get to see “Q” do his thing on the football field.

Urban finished his senior year for the Patriots with a .464 batting average, 37 RBIs and 43 runs. He is tentatively slotted to play left or centerfield for NU.

Biggs Edges Closer to the Big Time

Deverell Biggs — the class of 2010 Omaha Central grad was among the nation’s top 100 JUCO basketball players to be invited to the prestigious Mullen Top 100 JUCO Showcase Camp held last weekend in St. Louis. Last year 71 out of 100 campers eventually received D-1 scholarships, according to the camp’s website.

Biggs also made a move from Western Texas Community College to Seward County Kansas Community College, located in Liberal, KS.

Last season Biggs averaged 14 points per game as a freshman for Western Texas.

Top Nebraska HS Track Stars Prepare For National Junior Olympic Championships

Michelle Wallerstedt, Omaha Burke — the senior-to-be threw 136-1 to take 2^nd in the young women discus at the USA Youth Outdoor Track & Field Championships. She also is an automatic qualifier for the for USA Track and Field National Junior Olympic Championships (USATF JO Championships) that will be held in Wichita, Kansas on July 27 thru August 1^st at Wichita State University.

LaQue Moen-Davis , Omaha North—earlier this month in St. Paul, MN, the soon to be Texas A&M Aggie qualified for the USATF JO Championships by winning the JO Region 8 young women heptathlon (4359 pts.),  triple jump (38-11.5); 100 HH (14.23) and  a 2^nd place finish in the long jump (17-09).

Clara Nichols, Millard South —the Nebraska high school 400 meter state record holder placed 6^th (55.45) competing in the young women division 400m at the USA Youth Outdoor Track & Field Championships held in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. Nichols also qualified for USATF JO Championships by winning the JO Region 8 400m (56.23) and 800m (2:16.94).

Kenzo Cotton, Papillion-La Vista — the first freshman boy to win the state meet 200 meter gold medal qualified for the USATF JO Championships by winning the Region 8 intermediate boys 200m (22.78) and 100m (11.12).

Devin and Dennis Barfield (Omaha Central); Garrett Teel (Lincoln Pius X ) and Cody Rush (Grand Island Northwest) teamed up to win the JO Region 8 young men’s 400m relay with a very impressive time of 3:16.65. Dennis Barfield also qualified for the JO Nationals by finishing 4^th in the 400m (49.54).

Also qualifying for the USATF JO Championships at the JO Regional:  Nebraska track recruit Christian Sanderfer (Lincoln Southwest) won the young men decathlon (6087 pts), pole vault (15-9) and placed second in the 110 HH (15.04); Brady Rutt (Hastings) won the discus (184-10) and shot put (55-3.50); University of Missouri bound Drew Staskiewicz (Millard North) won the Hammer throw (191-04) and Enrique Alvarez (Bellevue West) won the young men 110m HH (14.84) and 400 IMH (58.40).

Nebraska vs. Colorado

Today’s Nebraska vs. Colorado may be one of the most important games in NU history. A lot is riding on the line here with none more important than a Husker berth to the 2010 Big 12 Conference Championship Game. Yet with the taste of last Saturday’s loss to Texas A&M and all the carnage that ensued still lingering on the tongue, the outcome of this game is huge.  At this point a Husker loss would be devastating on many fronts. From recruiting to the football program’s momentum as they move towards  Big Ten play next season—a lot is at stake.

Prediction: None!  The Buffaloes have a lot at stake too. A victory today and they qualify for a bowl game and their chances only improve with Taylor Martinez and Niles Paul sitting this one out and Roy Helu Jr. banged up (calf). If the Blackshirts can play like they have all season and someone on the offense steps up to the plate to deliver a big game the Huskers will be headed to Arlington, Texas next week. Though I think the Huskers can pull this one out there is simply too much other background noise form last Saturday still in the air. Will the Huskers be focused after the Bo Pelini outburst last weekend or will all that turmoil cause them misteps  throughout the game?

I can’t wait to find out.

Akoy Agau Moves Past Mike Gesell to Become MHN’s No. 1 Nebraska High School Basketball Prospect

It’s a rare occurrence around this part of the country when high school basketball fans get treated to witnessing the development of a potential college all-star like Ames, Iowa’s 6-foot-8, small forward Harrison Barnes, a North Carolina Tar Heels recruit that became the No. 1 ranked prospect in the nation for the class of 2010. Then again, sometimes rare occurrences have a way of doubling up on us when we least expect them. And such may be the case when it comes to Omaha Central’s 6-foot-7, 215lbs, sophomore Akoy Agau.  Projected as a power forward at the next level, some national basketball analyst believe that Agau has the potential to ascend the same mountaintop as Barnes, by 2013. Whether or not he reaches the summit will be our treat to watch.  

  It was not an easy decision to rank Agau over South Sioux City shooting guard Mike Gesell (6-0, junior), ranked the nation’s 23rd best shooting guard and the No. 116^th overall prospect in the class of 2012 by Rivals, and who has held our No.1 spot since his freshman year. But to ignore Agau’s tremendous raw potential is impossible. The young man is simply gifted with all the physical attributes (quickness, agility, height, frame and arm span) wrapped up in a demonstrated ability to use those tools to his advantage. All of which make Akoy Agau a very special high school basketball prospect–the kind of athlete that could be a game changer at the next level! 

It’s no wonder that Agau emerged from near obscurity, during his freshman year last season, to already possessing at least six division 1 scholarship offers (Creighton, Nebraska, Marquette, Indiana State, New Mexico, Colorado State). If he stays healthy, adds a little more bulk, and continues to improve his offensive game, by the end of this basketball season he will be one of the most sought after prospects in the nation. And that’s good news for all Nebraska high school basketball prospects, because more college coaches’ feet will be on the ground and potentially more eyes may be evaluating your game too.
